To add lot number to photos, use this free browser-based tool. It prints a number such as LOT 001 onto each photo in a batch, so you can match photos to auction lots, livestream items or inventory. Photos are read and processed inside your browser and are never uploaded, and there is no sign-up. You can add text to multiple photos in one run, with up to 100 photos per batch. Numbers follow the order of your list, so the first photo gets the first number and each next photo adds the step you set. It is also a way to number photos online without editing each image by hand. Some marketplaces restrict added text, so check their rules before you use numbered photos in a listing.

How to use the Add Lot Number to Photos tool

  1. Make sure “Print a number on each photo” is switched on. It is on by default.
  2. Set “Text before the number”. The default is “LOT “.
  3. Set “First number” (default 1) and “Step” (default 1).
  4. Set “Digits”. The default is 3, which gives LOT 001.
  5. Choose a “Position” from the nine options. The default is Top left.
  6. Set “Text size (% of the short side)”. The default is 6.
  7. Pick a “Style”: “White on dark box” (default), “Dark on light box” or “White with outline”.
  8. Add your photos with the “Choose photos” button or by dropping files on the box. You can add up to 100 per batch.
  9. Check the “Number on photo” row on each card. Numbers follow the order the photos were added; to change the order, clear the list and add the photos again in the order you want.
  10. Set the “Output size” menu and file type, then click “Download” on each card. When two or more photos are ready, “Download ZIP (first 10)” saves the first 10 results in one file.

To test your settings without a file, use “Try a sample photo”. Every photo is recalculated when you change an option. “Clear all” empties the list. Whole-batch ZIPs are a planned Pro feature and are not available yet.

How does the tool decide which number goes on each photo?

The tool numbers photos in list order. The first photo gets the “First number”, and each next photo adds the “Step”. The “Number on photo” row on each result shows what was printed, so you can check it before you download.

Why is the number drawn into the photo itself?

The number is drawn into the pixels, not stored as metadata. That means it stays with the image wherever the file goes, and it cannot be removed without the original photo. Keep your originals if you may need an unnumbered version.

What size will my numbered photos be?

The default output is “Keep the shape, longest side 2000 px” with “Never enlarge small photos” ticked. This is our default, not a marketplace rule. A 4,000 × 3,000 photo becomes 2,000 × 1,500 px, and a 3,000 × 4,000 photo becomes 1,500 × 2,000 px. The other sizes are “Keep the original size” and “Square, 1200 × 1200 px”. For a custom size, use “Custom size…”. When a photo has to be enlarged to reach the output size, its card shows the percentage, because an enlarged photo has no extra detail.

Why do marketplace rules matter for numbered photos?

Marketplaces differ on added text. eBay’s picture policy does not allow added text or watermarks on listing photos, so check that rule before you use numbered photos on eBay. Numbers are most useful for auction lots, livestream sales where items are called by number, inventory photos and sorting. For other marketplaces, read their current help pages, because this tool does not hold their rules.

What happens to photo data when the tool saves a file?

Saving through the tool writes a new file without the original’s camera, date and location (EXIF) data. Photos with an EXIF rotation are drawn the right way up. HEIC photos from an iPhone may not open outside Safari; if yours does not, export it as JPEG first.

Why does the file limit not apply to PNG files?

“Keep each file under” lowers the JPEG or WebP quality until the file fits, and if quality alone is not enough, it shrinks the pixels in steps. PNG files cannot be shrunk this way, so the limit is not applied to PNG and the tool says so. JPEG is the default file type, and PNG and WebP are also offered.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add lot numbers to many photos at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 photos per batch with “Choose photos” or by dropping files on the box, and each one gets the next number in the list order.

Are my photos uploaded when I add numbers?

No. Photos are read and processed inside your browser and are never uploaded. The tool is free and needs no sign-up.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set “First number” to the number you want for the first photo, and set “Step” to control how much each next photo increases.

Can I change the text in front of the number?

Yes. Change “Text before the number” from its default “LOT " to any text you need.

Does eBay allow numbers on listing photos?

eBay’s picture policy does not allow added text or watermarks on listing photos. Check the current policy before you list.

Can I remove the number from a photo later?

Not from the numbered file. The number is drawn into the pixels, so you need the original photo to make an unnumbered version.

Which order do the numbers follow?

They follow the order the photos were added to the list. The first photo gets the “First number”, and each next photo adds the “Step”.
