Etsy does not publish a thumbnail pixel size, so there is no official etsy thumbnail size to copy. Etsy’s help page says photos are cropped to a square thumbnail, so you should leave a border around the item, and it recommends horizontal photos at a 4:3 ratio. This page explains those rules and offers a free batch tool that resizes many listing photos at once. Each preview can show a dashed centre square, so you can see what a square crop would keep. The tool runs in your browser, your photos are never uploaded, and no sign-up is needed. Its default output of 2,667 × 2,000 px is our own default, not an Etsy rule.

How to use the Etsy Thumbnail Size tool

  1. Click “Choose photos” or drop your files onto the box. A batch can hold up to 100 photos. To try the tool first, click “Try a sample photo”.
  2. Open the “Output size” menu. The default is “4:3 landscape, 2667 × 2000 px”. You can also pick “Square, 2000 × 2000 px”, or choose “Custom size…” and enter “Width (px)” and “Height (px)”.
  3. Under “How the photo fits the frame”, choose “Keep the whole photo (add background around it)” to keep every part of the item. Choose “Fill the frame (cut off the overflow)” only if you are happy to lose the edges. With the fill option, set “Crop focus” to Centre, Top, Bottom, Left or Right.
  4. Leave “Show a square thumbnail crop on the previews” switched on. It is on by default. Turn on “Never enlarge small photos” if you do not want small photos stretched.
  5. If you need a file-size limit, set “Keep each file under” in KB or MB.
  6. Check each card for “Original”, “Output size” and “File” sizes, plus any notes or checks. Click “Download” on a single card, or click “Download ZIP (first 10)” when two or more photos are ready. The free ZIP holds the first 10 results.

You can save files as JPEG (the default), PNG or WebP. Use the file name pattern tokens {name}, {n}, {lot} and {w}, {h} to build names. Click “Clear all” to empty the list.

What is the Etsy thumbnail size?

Etsy’s help page does not give a thumbnail size in pixels. It says photos are cropped to a square thumbnail, so the item should sit inside a border rather than touch the edges. Treat any single pixel figure you see elsewhere with caution.

Why does a square crop matter for an Etsy thumbnail?

A square crop keeps only the centre of a wider photo. If your item sits near an edge, it may be cut off in the thumbnail while looking fine at full size. The dashed centre square on each preview shows what a centred square would keep. It is our own guide, and Etsy’s crop and placement tool decides the real thumbnail.

What does the 4:3 ratio mean for my listing photos?

A 4:3 ratio means the width is four parts to the height’s three. Etsy recommends this ratio and horizontal photos. The default “4:3 landscape, 2667 × 2000 px” follows that ratio. Etsy’s help page also suggests avoiding square crops for listing photos.

Which Etsy photo numbers are published, and where do they come from?

Etsy’s help page gives two numbers that matter here. The first listing photo’s width and height should each be at least 635 px. The recommended listing photo size is at least 2000 px in width and height. The help page returned an HTTP 403 error to automated reads on 16 October 2026. The figures above therefore come from the Internet Archive copy saved on 5 January 2026.

How does the tool fit a photo into the frame?

With “Keep the whole photo (add background around it)”, the photo is scaled to fit inside the frame and bars are added to the empty sides. For example, a 3,000 × 2,000 px photo in a 2,667 × 2,000 px frame is drawn at 2,667 × 1,778 px, with 111 px bars above and below. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, so the output never has transparency.

Why does a card sometimes show a percentage?

When a photo must be enlarged to reach the output size, the card shows the enlargement in percent. An enlarged photo has no extra detail, so the figure tells you how much the pixels were stretched.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Etsy thumbnail size in pixels?

Etsy’s help page does not give one. It says photos are cropped to a square thumbnail, so leave a border around the item. The page also recommends a 4:3 ratio.

Is 2,667 × 2,000 px the Etsy size?

No. It is the default “4:3 landscape, 2667 × 2000 px” in our tool, chosen to match the 4:3 ratio. It is not an Etsy rule.

Can the tool confirm that Etsy will accept my photo?

No. The tool shows sizes, notes and checks based on the Etsy listing-photo checks, but it cannot tell you how Etsy will treat a listing.

Are my photos uploaded when I use the tool?

No. Photos are read and processed inside your browser and are never uploaded. The tool is free and needs no sign-up.

Does the tool remove or change backgrounds?

No. It does not remove or replace backgrounds, and it does not edit colours except where you choose a background colour for transparent areas.

Can a PNG file be kept under a size limit?

No. The “Keep each file under” limit works by lowering JPEG or WebP quality and then shrinking pixels. PNG files cannot be shrunk this way, so the tool does not apply the limit to PNG and says so.
