This free tool resizes a batch of product photos to the shopify product image size you choose. Its default output, which is our choice and not a Shopify rule, is a square 2048 × 2048 px. The tool runs in your browser, so photos are read and processed on your device and are never uploaded, and no sign-up is needed. Shopify’s own product media page lists the largest image as up to 5000 × 5000 px and the largest file as under 20 MB, and it notes that 2048 × 2048 px usually displays best. Sellers on online marketplaces can use the same steps to prepare a batch of listing photos. Check the numbers on this page against the help page you are working from.

How to use this tool

  1. Click “Choose photos” or drop files onto the box. A batch can hold up to 100 photos. To try the tool first, click “Try a sample photo”.
  2. Open the “Output size” menu and pick “Square, 2048 × 2048 px” (our default), “Keep the shape, longest side 2048 px” or “Square, 1024 × 1024 px”. For another size, choose “Custom size…” and enter values in “Width (px)” and “Height (px)”.
  3. Under “How the photo fits the frame”, choose “Keep the whole photo (add background around it)” or “Fill the frame (cut off the overflow)”.
  4. If you chose the fill option, set “Crop focus” to Centre, Top, Bottom, Left or Right.
  5. Set “Background colour” (default #ffffff). It fills any bars around a padded photo and any transparent area.
  6. Turn on “Never enlarge small photos” if you do not want small photos stretched to the output size.
  7. Optional: set “Keep each file under” in KB or MB. This does not apply to PNG files, and the tool says so.
  8. Check each card. It shows the “Original” size, “Output size”, “File” size and any notes or checks.
  9. Click “Download” on a card, or click “Download ZIP (first 10)” when two or more photos are ready.

Every photo is recalculated when an option changes, so you can adjust settings and check the cards again before you download. Use “Clear all” to empty the list before you start a new batch.

What is the shopify product image size?

Shopify does not set one fixed size for product images. It recommends a square of 2048 × 2048 px, which it says usually displays best, and its largest listed image is up to 5000 × 5000 px (25 megapixels). Shopify also gives no fixed aspect ratio. It recommends a consistent ratio so that collection pages line up.

Our default output of 2048 × 2048 px matches Shopify’s recommended square. That choice belongs to this tool and is not a platform rule.

What are the shopify image requirements for file type and size?

Shopify’s product media page lists PNG as the best file type, then JPEG, and also accepts TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP. It lists the largest file as under 20 MB.

The theme images page states a different limit: 20 megapixels and 20 MB for uploaded images. The two pages state different pixel limits, so both are given here. Staying under 20 megapixels satisfies both pages. These figures were read on 16 October 2026, so check the live pages before you upload.

How does the tool fit a photo into a square frame?

With “Keep the whole photo (add background around it)”, the photo is scaled to fit and bars are added on the short sides. For example, a 4,000 × 3,000 photo in a 2,048 × 2,048 frame is drawn at 2,048 × 1,536 px, with 256 px bars above and below.

A 6,000 × 4,000 photo with the longest side set to 2,048 px becomes 2,048 × 1,365 px. A 5,000 × 5,000 photo fills the frame at 2,048 × 2,048 px with no bars.

The fill option scales the photo to cover the frame and cuts off the overflow. “Crop focus” decides which part stays. When a photo is enlarged to reach the output size, its card shows by how many percent, because an enlarged photo has no extra detail.

How do I whiten a grey or white product background?

Use “Whiten a greyish background (white point)”, a slider from 200 to 255. At 255 it is off. Any colour value at or above the number you choose becomes 255, so a light grey or near-white backdrop becomes pure white. It also brightens the whole photo slightly.

This control does not remove or replace a coloured background, shadows or clutter.

“Trim white margins and fit the product to [85] %” finds the product as the pixels that are not white, crops the empty margin, and centres the product at the percentage you choose. It works only on a white or nearly white backdrop. On a photo with no white margin, it finds nothing to trim and says so.

Frequently asked questions

Is this shopify product image size tool free?

Yes. The tool is free and needs no sign-up.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Photos are read and processed inside your browser and are never uploaded.

Why does “Keep each file under” not shrink my PNG?

PNG files cannot be shrunk this way, so the limit is not applied to PNG and the tool says so. JPEG and WebP files have their quality lowered until they fit and, if needed, their pixels are reduced in steps.

Why won’t my HEIC photo open?

HEIC photos from an iPhone may not open outside Safari. If yours does not, export it as JPEG first.

Does the output keep my camera, date and location data?

No. Saving a photo through the tool writes a new file without the original’s camera, date and location (EXIF) data.

Can the output have a transparent background?

No. Transparent areas are filled with the chosen “Background colour”, so the output never has transparency.

Does a larger output size make a small photo sharper?

No. The card shows by how many percent the photo was enlarged, because an enlarged photo has no extra detail.

How big can a Shopify product image be?

Shopify’s product media page says up to 5000 × 5000 px (25 megapixels) and a file under 20 MB.
